Had Building Work Done? What Your Regular Cleaner Can and Can’t Help With 🛠️
Building work can transform your home, but it can also leave behind an incredible amount of dust, even when the work has been completed carefully.
Fine dust has a habit of travelling far beyond the room where the work took place. It can settle on furniture, skirting boards, doors, windowsills and floors, sometimes continuing to reappear after the initial clean.
If you’re already one of my regular clients, you might wonder whether I can help during your usual cleaning appointment. The answer is: possibly, depending on the type and amount of dust left behind, but I don’t provide specialist post-building cleans.
Here’s what that means and how I may still be able to help.
What is a post-building clean?
A post-building or post-construction clean is a specialist service carried out after building, renovation or major decorating work.
It may involve removing:
Large amounts of fine building dust
Plaster and cement residue
Paint splashes
Grout or silicone
Adhesive and sticky residue
Labels and protective coverings
Rubble, sharp fragments or other building debris
This type of cleaning can require specialist products, protective equipment and industrial machinery designed to deal with construction dust safely.
Because my service focuses on regular domestic cleaning and home reset cleans, I don’t offer full post-building cleans.
Why can’t it be included in a normal appointment?
A regular maintenance clean is planned around everyday household cleaning, such as bathrooms, kitchens, dusting, floors and general surface cleaning.
Building dust is very different from ordinary household dust. It can settle repeatedly, spread into other rooms and require several careful passes to remove. If there is a significant amount of it, attempting to tackle it during an ordinary appointment could take up the entire visit. It can also affect cleaning equipment and may require different products or methods, particularly if paint, plaster, grout or adhesive needs to be removed.
Trying to squeeze a specialist job into a normal maintenance appointment may mean that neither the building dust nor your usual household clean can be completed properly.
Can you help if I’m already a regular client?
If you’re an existing regular client and you’ve recently had some work completed, I may be able to help with small amounts of light residual dust once the builders or decorators have carried out their main clean.
Depending on the condition of the area and the time available, this might include:
Dusting accessible surfaces
Wiping doors, skirting boards and windowsills
Hoovering suitable floors
Mopping hard flooring
Cleaning nearby furniture and household surfaces
Gradually working through dust that has travelled into other rooms
This would be considered on a case-by-case basis and must be discussed with me before your appointment. Photos are really helpful, as they allow me to see the condition of the space and decide whether it’s something I can safely and realistically help with.
What am I unable to take on?
I won’t be able to clean an area if it still contains heavy building dust, rubble, sharp materials or unfinished work.
My regular cleaning service doesn’t include removing:
Dried paint, plaster or cement
Grout, silicone or sealant
Glue or construction adhesive
Heavy dust from recently cut or sanded materials
Building waste or rubble
Potentially hazardous materials
Residue that requires specialist chemicals or equipment
The building work must be completely finished, and all tools, waste and protective materials should be removed before I arrive.
If a full post-construction clean is required, I’ll recommend contacting a specialist company that has the appropriate equipment and insurance for that type of work.
Your usual clean may need to be adjusted
Even a relatively small amount of building dust can take longer to remove than expected.
If I agree to help, we may need to adjust the priorities for that appointment. This could mean focusing on the affected rooms and leaving some of your usual cleaning tasks until the next visit.
In some cases, the dust may need to be tackled gradually over more than one appointment. I’ll always be honest about what can realistically be completed within your booked time. Additional time may also be needed, subject to availability and agreement in advance.
If you have building or decorating work planned, please tell me beforehand, even if you expect the builders to clean up afterwards.
A quick message and a few photographs can help me understand:
What work has been completed
Which rooms have been affected
How much dust or residue remains
Whether the area is safe and suitable for me to clean
Whether your appointment time or priorities need to change
Please don’t wait until I arrive to mention it, as I may not have the right equipment or enough time available.
Clear expectations create better results
I completely understand wanting your home to feel clean and comfortable again after building work. However, there’s an important difference between removing a little leftover dust for a regular client and carrying out a specialist post-building clean.
Where it’s safe and manageable, I’m happy to discuss how I can support my existing clients with smaller areas or light residual dust. For anything more substantial, a specialist post-construction cleaner will be the safest and most suitable option.
Being clear beforehand means I can protect my equipment, work safely and give your home the care it deserves, without promising more than can realistically be completed during a regular appointment.
